The Challenge
The PV installation was funded by Bristol City Council via a Power Purchase Agreement. This was offered to all companies in Bristol in attempt to achieve their target of reducing the City’s carbon emissions by 40% by 2020, whilst also reducing the City’s energy usage by 30% in the same period. In addition to this, the Council also target the city’s energy supply to be supplied entirely by renewable energy before 2050.
The 460 panel PV installation was part of a joint initiative between Bristol City Council (BCC) and the stadium owner – Bristol Sport – and coincided with the £45m redevelopment of the stadium’s West Stand immediately after the ongoing playing season. Given the size of the structure and the public presence at the stadium, this project presented a unique set of challenges.
OUR SOLUTION
The solar PV array consists of 460 Vikram 255W panels and generates over 96 MWh every year, with 100% of this energy expected to be used onsite. The system was installed by a four-man team in just seven days, working around the busy schedule of the stadium development that needed to be completed in time for the start of the 2016/17 season in August.
The development saw the stadium upgraded to a state-of-the-art 27,000 capacity stadium, with the solar PV installation reducing the facility’s carbon emissions by 20% whilst also reducing its energy costs by £150,000 over 20 years.
In addition to the solar PV installation, the new efficient stadium development boasts heat pumps, low water consumption taps, air-to-air heat recovery and low energy lighting.
The PV installation at Ashton Gate is the latest project that we’ve worked on for Bristol City Council having also recently installed systems for them at the M-Shed museum, the council offices at 100 Temple Street, Bristol Library and St Matthias Pupil Referral Unit.
THE RESULT
We were pleased to be supporting Bristol City Council’s campaign to encourage more businesses to choose solar, with the installation of a 460-panel system at Ashton Gate. It’s a great example of how partnerships can work, and complements the other energy efficient measures the stadium has implemented in order to reduce its carbon footprint.
As well as being home to the two largest sports teams in the area, the stadium also hosts numerous conferences and events every day. The installation of Solar PV helps make sure the stadium’s operations are environmentally friendly while also cutting down on operating costs.
The completion of this project enables Bristol City to reduce their CO2 output by 44,038kg, and puts them on course to run entirely on clean energy by 2050 – falling in line with the government’s national target.
