The Challenge
Airbus wanted to improve their green credentials and invest in renewable energy technology. That’s why the aeroplane manufacturer approached us to design and install a solar PV system on one of their sites, to help them meet their corporate social responsibility goals.
The installation of this project was unique and presented its own set of challenges.
As the site is an operational airfield, it meant that our installation team were required to follow very strict personnel management and processes during their operations due to the high security restrictions.
OUR SOLUTION
We designed and installed 2454 Trina 315W panels to make a 773kWp system for their site.
Due to the type of operations that take place there, we were required to design our system in line with glint and glare requirements to make sure the reflected sunlight from the shiny surfaces doesn’t affect the pilots during flight.
In order to achieve this, we used dipped mounting clamps to adjust the angle of the solar PV panels to make sure the system passed the glint and glare assessment.
We also used mono-modules in order to increase the efficiency of the system, optimise the performance and give it a sleeker appearance which kept it in align with assessment requirements.
THE RESULT
The system was finalised and completed after an eight-week programme during the winter months. It was essential to our client that the site remained operational during the site’s upgrade, so we worked hard to prevent any disruption for their operations.
The solar PV system was installed using their current LV panel board, and additionally came with a SE Smart Metre to monitor for optimum performance.
As a result of this project, our client is now set to meet their green environmental goals and contribute significantly to the government’s target. The wider benefits of this investment decision can be seen in the wider community, as they’ll be able to enjoy cleaner air for many years to come.
