Challenge

Harrods, the iconic luxury department store, embarked on a mission to integrate a solar PV system onto its building in Thames Valley, in order to maximise energy generation and achieve a substantial carbon offset.

The project introduced unique complexities, including the installation of a new main LV distribution board, the construction of a dedicated internal switchgear room, and the careful coordination of a shutdown process involving multiple stakeholders.

Securing the project through a Direct Tender, we devised a tailored solution to meet Harrods’ exacting requirements.

Weekly stakeholder meetings ensured effective communication and personnel management throughout the project.

Navigating the intricacies of the shutdown process demanded careful planning and coordination, while the addition of a new roof hatch with alarms enhanced system protection and site access functionality.

To monitor energy usage comprehensively, we incorporated an eMIG smart metering system.

The 1.6MWp solar PV system uses 3,766 panels which is expected to contribute to an annual output of 1,415,975kWh. In addition, the system is predicted to achieve an impressive carbon offset of 300,654kgCO2e in its inaugural year.

The introduction of new infrastructure elements not only met Harrods’ objectives for sustainability but also set a precedent for future solar initiatives within its property portfolio.

This project exemplified our adeptness in navigating complex challenges, delivering innovative solutions, and establishing a collaborative and effective project management approach within the luxury retail sector.
