Between 1pm and 4pm on the 25th March 2017, the transmission system demand on the National Grid was lower than the overnight demand for the first time in UK history. Thanks to sunny conditions across the UK and cool temperatures, solar PV systems up and down the Country were credited for the reduced demand of 25GW (compared to 26GW overnight) to power homes and businesses.
Due to the success of solar PV systems online that afternoon, gas and coal generators were forced to reduce their output; another proud moment to support the argument for continued investment and support in renewables over brown fuel.
It is reported that over 12 GW of solar PV is now deployed across the UK with many calling for the Government to put a new strategy in place to repeat the surge in deployment seen in 2015 before the cuts to the feed in tariff in January 2016.
